IJM motto “Health, Safety and Environment is Everyone’s Responsibility” has been the guiding principle to inculcate a high level of occupational safety, health and environmental practices into IJM Groups work culture.

IJM Corporation Berhad and IJM Construction Sdn. Bhd. is the first construction company in Malaysia certified with OHSAS 18001:1999 by SIRIM in November 2000. In 2002, one of the IJM subsidiaries, Prebore Piling and Engineering Sdn. Bhd. was certified with OHSAS 18001.  It was followed by other subsidiaries namely TORSCO Sdn. Bhd. and Jurutama Sdn. Bhd., certified in November 2006.  The Group’s commitment and continuous effort on safety and health was again recognised with the certification of MS 1722:Part 1:2005 by SIRIM in 2006.
 

IJM commitment towards protecting and safeguarding the environment were rewarded with the certification of EMS ISO 14001:2004 by SIRIM to IJM Corporation Berhad, IJM Construction Sdn Bhd and Prebore Piling and Engineering Sdn Bhd.

HSE Policy Statement 
(HSE Policy Statement)

The Group continually strives and committed to improve its Health, Safety and Environment practices with the objectives of preventing accident, preventing occupational illnesses and preventing Environmental pollution.

HSE Management Committee 

The Committee is chaired by the CEO and Managing Director. The Committee comprises Deputy CEO and Deputy Managing Director, Heads of Departments and Project Unit Heads. The committee meets periodically to review overall HSE performance across the company to ensure its continuity, suitability, adequacy and effectiveness.

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Department

The Department has been established in year1995, known as Safety & Health Department. In year 2006, the name has been changed to Health, Safety and Environment Department, being integration of the two fields i.e. Safety & Health and Environment.  

The functions of HSE Department are:

1.

Organizing and coordinating the HSEMS activities at all levels in IJM

2.

Monitoring the implementation of HSEMS across the company

3.

Identifying, coordination and promoting HSEMS to the entire staff, including training

4.

Establishing and controlling of data and documents pertaining to HSE e.g. Manual and Procedures (HSE Documentation Structure)

5.

Planning and carrying out internal HSE Audit

6.

Arranging for periodic management reviews


Continuous HSE Training and Awareness

In line with its efforts to achieve the objectives, IJM recognizes the need to impart education and disseminate essential knowledge on health, safety and environment to all employees. Various training and awareness programmes were held to promote HSE culture. These include OHSAS 18001:1999 and ISO 14001:2004 awareness program, Legal Awareness on OSHA 1994, FMA 1967 and EQA 1974, First Aid and CPR training, Emergency Response Plan (ERP), Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control (HIRARC), Environmental Aspects and Impacts, Internal Audit Training, Chemical Handling and Chemical Register, Accident Investigation, Traffic Management and Road Safety, Best Environmental Practices, and EQA: Compliance In Practice.  The selection of staff to attend the trainings carry out by the Project Managers and Departmental Heads based on the IJM Training Matrix.

IJM Good HSE Practices

The OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 provide principles for the best HSE management practices as well as comply with all applicable HSE legal and other requirements.  As far as it is practicable, all project sites and workplaces within the Group will continuously ensure all hazards and risk and significant environmental aspects can be eliminated and minimized.


Environmental Pollution Control Measures

Construction activities might contributes towards various types of environmental aspects and  impact, either benificially or adversely. Therefore, IJM has taken enormous initiatives to control and mitigate environmental pollution arises from our daily operation.  The control measures are varies depending on the nature of work and the surrounding of the workplaces. In general, common environmental pollution control measures can be divided into several categories based on the environmental aspects identified and common environmental issues at workplace:
