IJM's abilities have
long enabled it to be Malaysia's strong partner for growth and this
is clearly seen in its involvement in port operations. In line with
government's wishes to turn the East Coast of the peninsula into a
regional petrochemical hub, we have made significant contributions,
to ensure Kuantan Port and Kemaman Port becomes the leading maritime
trade and logistic centres in
the region
In Kuantan Port, we brought our skills to develop, expand, manage
and operate wide ranging,
state-of-the-art berths and facilities.
With privatisation, productivity has seen a marked improvement. We
have moved ahead to enlarge the inner harbour basin and add capacity
in the light of rapidly increasing cargo and vessels traffic. We at
IJM however understand that a successful port needs more than just
improved quality and efficiency; the port needs a critical link and
a role in the cargo generation and distribution process. Kuantan
Port offers this critical link in the national port system through
its strong cargo base in the handling of national trade thus
becoming a catalyst in the development of the East Coast of the
peninsular. By continually improving on the quality and efficiency
of port services, we will ensure the Port stays in demand with
shippers, helping further the nation's maritime ambitions.
On February 2003, IJM has expanded the scope of its port operations
to Kemaman Port. Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd now operates
Kemaman Port's 510 metre long West Wharf. In addition to the West
Wharf, we have taken interest in the privatisation of Kemaman Port
to manage and operate the East Wharf and Liquid Chemical Berth under
Konsortium Pelabuhan Kemaman Sdn Bhd. The Economic Planning Unit is
finalising the details of our proposal to operate the East Wharf and
Liquid Chemical Berth.
In addition to the Kemaman Port operations, we have also taken great
interest in the development of the adjacent Teluk Kalung Industrial
Area in Kemaman. The area provides excellent logistics and is a cost
effective solution for heavy, chemical and petrochemical industries.
